Indiana Law (IC 20-30-5-4) requires that all schools (grades 6-12) teach election materials during a year when a general election takes place.  Our BCJHS students have spent a considerable amount of time in the past few weeks learning about the process by which we elect our government officials and about the candidates running for office both state and national. As a culminating activity, out students participated in a statewide voting simulation sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education.  The following represents the results of voting at BCJHS:

President of the United States:

Donald Trump  62%
Hillary Clinton  28%
Gary Johnson  10%

Indiana Governor:

Eric Holcomb  50%

Emily Earnshaw - 7th grader at BCJH competed in National History Day

This was Emily's first year participating in National History Day. The theme for this year was Encountering, Exploring and Exchange ….
The topic Emily chose was the history of bio-chemical warfare. "I wanted to study a topic not many people know about and that interests me. As my current plan is to join the Navy and become a nurse practitioner then transfer into the Marines or attend Purdue University after graduation. In the early stages of research I was overwhelmed with information so I scaled back my topic to only biochemical warfare during WWI and WWII, however that was still quite broad. I chose a website because it had the greatest word count, and I am quite expressive. But, even with the website’s large word count (1,200), I still had a lot to say."  Emily placed first at the state competition which earned her a spot at the national competition in Washington DC over the summer.  We are very proud of her hard work, effort, and success!!  Attached is a picture of Emily and the CEO of Southwest Airlines who she happened to meet at the airport on the return trip. Southwest Airlines is a major supporter of the National History Day Competition.
